I’M LATE – BUT DON’T YOU BE FOR OUR NEXT CWAC AT NORTHGATE!

For people who live in or near Glenorchy, there is a Cuppa With A Cop (CWAC) on at Northgate Shopping Centre on Wednesday, 10 June 26 at 11am. Make an effort to go and get a free coffee and have a chat to the local Glenorchy Police. We always have stuff to give away so don’t miss out.

TALK ABOUT RUNNING LATE!

June is obviously the month for losing track of time! Nominations for our 2026 Neighbourhood Watch Awards can still be lodged by email to admin@nhwtas.org.au before 31 July 26. Don’t leave it to someone else – because it won’t happen. This could be your Do One Thing (DOT) for 2026! Get your nominations in early and don’t be found wanting when we run the surprise DOT Audit!

NEIGHBOURS EVERY DAY

An initiative of Relationships Australia, a kindred organisation to us, is Neighbours Every Day. It is poignant to share the following extracts from their recent correspondence which reinforce the value of what we try to do with every Neighbourhood Watch activity.

Some of the most powerful acts of belonging don’t start with a grand gesture. They start with turning up to your street, your community, your neighbours—and saying, I’m here.

The ‘Neighbours Every Day’ campaign is recognised by the World Health Organisation for reducing loneliness and sits within Australia’s National Suicide Prevention Strategy. Because loneliness isn’t just personal—it’s a public health issue. And belonging, built street by street, is part of the answer.

NHWA JOURNAL

The Neighbourhood Watch Australasia Journal is now available online at: www.nhwa.com.au/news-media/journal. Every edition includes articles from Tasmania, as well as good ideas from other states, territories and New Zealand. Follow the link to have a read or print your own copy to savour the content when looking for inspiration.

The next publication will also come out in hard copy so if you have a good article or success story to share, please put a few words and photos together and we can help polish them up for submission.

CALENDAR DRAWING COMPETITION

Thank you to all those children who have entered our 2027 Calendar Drawing Competition. And a special thanks to all our NHW Volunteers who made a special effort to encourage children to get their entries in. Winners will be notified before 31 August 26.

HOONING DRIVERS

Reports about dangerous driving can be made to police by calling 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000, or at crimestopperstas.com.au. If you can’t report it at the time but you have footage, submit it to the Tasmania Police evidence portal at https://www.police.tas.gov.au/report/.

REPORTING MINOR THEFTS TO POLICE ONLINE

Sometimes we may have been the victim of a minor theft and prevaricate on whether we should report it to the police by phoning 131 444. Did you know that you can report minor thefts online at a time that is convenient to you? There are a few do’s and don’ts, but you can get all the information you need if you just follow this link: https://www.police.tas.gov.au/reportonline/theft/

CONGRATULATIONS TO ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER DOUG OOSTERLOO APM

Neighbourhood Watch congratulates Assistant Commissioner Doug Oosterloo who was named in the King’s Birthday, Australian Honours List, as the recipient of the Australian Police Medal (APM).

Many will remember Doug being our guest presenter at the 2024 NHW Awards when he spoke of his early engagement with NHW as a young constable in Burnie. Doug reinforced the importance he placed on the contribution of NHW, and our volunteers, helping to reduce the fear of crime and improving the safety and wellbeing of our community members.

Well done, Doug!
