TASMANIAN WINS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH AUSTRALASIA – VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR!

Congratulations to Stephen Bourke, our Howrah Gardens/Glebe Hill NHW Coordinator who has recently been announced by Neighbourhood Watch Australasia as the 2025 Volunteer of the Year. Stephen was assessed by an independent national panel of judges as the outstanding nominee from a high-quality field of candidates.

Stephen is also the manager of our state NHW Face Book Page and is particularly well known in his local area as the Road Safety School Crossing Guard for Clarence Plains. We are very proud of Stephen and delighted to congratulate him for being recognised by such a prestigious award.

HOONING DRIVERS

Reports about dangerous driving can be made to police by calling 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000, or at crimestopperstas.com.au. If you can’t report it at the time but you have footage, submit it to the Tasmania Police evidence portal at https://www.police.tas.gov.au/report/.

TIME IS RUNNNING OUT FOR OUR AWARD NOMINATIONS

Every year Neighbourhood Watch Tasmania recognises the good work of our members, volunteers and supporters at our Annual Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony. We need you, the reader, to nominate people who deserve to receive a Neighbourhood Watch Award. Email your nominees to admin@nhwtas.org.au and we will help put the documentation together. It’s our 40th birthday – so let’s celebrate by championing our champions!

CALENDAR DRAWING COMPETITION

Our Calendar Drawing Competition has been open for two months, and entries will close on 31 May 26! Entry forms can be downloaded from our website at: https://nhwtas.org.au/calendar-drawing-competition/. Please encourage everyone you know to promote this competition to primary schools and parents. We want this to be our best calendar yet and the winners will be invited to receive their prizes at the Tasmania Police Academy ceremony on Saturday, 17 October 26.

SAFETY TIP N0. 7 – Online Child Safety

Know which websites and apps your children are using and talk openly to them about the potential risks of sharing personal information or photos online. Online child sexual exploitation can happen to anyone, anywhere. For more information visit the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation at: www.accce.gov.au.

Please go along and support our members from Ravenswood Neighbourhood Watch, Tasmania Police and the many other community organisations in the Ravenswood Community.

NHWA JOURNAL OUT NOW!

Please find attached the link to the latest Neighbourhood Watch Australasia Journal for May 2026. This edition will only be available online – there will be no hard copy distribution. It went live last Friday, 1 May 26, and an electronic newsletter was also sent to the NHWA email database on the same day to announce the release.

Head to www.nhwa.com.au/news-media/journal to view and share it!

A GREAT INITIATIVE FROM ACROSS THE DITCH!

In keeping with our mantra of at least Do One thing (DOT), a recent article from Neighbourhood Support in New Zealand promotes the initiative of Love Your Drain or Be a Grate Mate. Quite simply, the campaign is about encouraging residents to care for the stormwater drain in their street. Small acts like clearing leaves and rubbish help prevent flooding and protect waterways and promote neighbourhood connection and resilience.

THE TASPORTS COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM – INVESTING IN THE PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT KEEP TASMANIA STRONG.

TasPorts provide funding to support community groups, organisations and events that make a real difference in the regions they serve – and beyond. Applications from across Tasmania are welcome where there’s a strong alignment with Community Wellbeing, Inclusion and Place. The grants support projects that strengthen resilient, inclusive and connected communities across Tasmania.

This sounds right up the NHW Alley! If you have an idea for bringing people together, building skills, supporting wellbeing, or creating pride in the places we live and work, check out this link for more grant information: https://tasports.com.au/grant-program.
